All things Berlin

Hello! Hope you are enjoying Berlin (it is hard not to:)! In case you are wondering where to go and what to do, here’s a list of my favorite places:

Museums:

Hamburger Bahnhoff-Museum fur Gegenwart (permanent exhibit includes works by Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol)

Neue Nationalgalerie (permanent exhibit includes Pablo Picasso, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Max Beckmann, Otto Dix)

The Museum Berggruen (includes Picasso, Klee, Matisse)

Neues Museum and Pergamonmuseum (includes reconstructed Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate).

These are all Staaliche Museun (http://www.smb.museum/smb/home/index.php), so they are free on Thursday after 6. Some other places of interest are the amazing Helmut Newton Museum, DDR museum ( a lot of fun artifacts from Soviet times), Bauhaus Archive and, of course, a number of amazing art galleries all over Berlin.:)

Opera:

if you like Opera or if it’s your first time going to see one, you are in the right city!:) Komische Oper Berlin presents operas with a post-modern twist, which are never short of being controversial, and Deutsche Oper Berlin has more classic interpretations. If you plan to go often you can get a Classic Card or , as a student, you can get tickets half price if you buy them shortly before the performance.

Festivals:

There is also a number of awesome festivals in Berlin during the summer including Annual Berlin Theater Event (Theatertreffen) and Dance Festival in May, Carnival of Cultures (Karnival der Kulturen) in Kreuzberg, Berlin Gay and Lesbian Festival around Nollendorfplatz and Christopher Steert Day in Tiergarten in June, 48 Stunden Neukolln (my absolute favourite!) in June or July and Lange Nacht der Museun in August. Also, all around Berlin there is a number of music festivals, one of them is MELT.

Places:

My favourite places (parks, etc.) are Britzer Garten, Viktoriapark in Kreuzberg (has a waterfall), Tiergarten, Mauerpark (flee market and live karaoke every Sunday with 100s of people) Hakescher Markt (great place next t Museum Island), Gendarmenmarkt, Kulturbrauerei (former brewery now hosts many bars, restaurants, events), Wasserturm (a 30m high tower built as a local water reservoir is now turned into trendy apprtments; it stands on a hill, which serves as home to a craaaazy number of bunnies and is surrounded by a number of cute cafes) and Zoologischegarten (Berlin zoo).

Also, if you just want to wonder around here are some fun streets with a number of cafes and restaurants and always full of people are Kastanienallee (food, drinks and shopping), Kurfustendamn (if you’d like to shop for some Chanel), Oranienstrasses, Oranienburgstrasse, Munk strasse, Augustin strasse.

Tacheles, a one-time department store, then SS headquarters and now occupied by squatters, hosts a number of art studios, open air exhibits and bars, is a must see. Tempelhoff Airport , famous for being a drop off point for Berlin Airlift, which is now converted into a park, is a fun place to bike, bbq and have a picnick. Also, Badeschiffe, a swimming pool in Spree river, open on May 1 and is a great place to spend a day. Next door is Arena club, which hosts a lot of concerts. And of course, Berlin Fashion Week including Bread and Butter and Premium events is fun for any fashionista!:)

Bars/restaurants:

Zu mir oder zu Dir- in Pranzlauerberg, great atmosphere and music

Kafe Luzia-in Kreuzberg, cool design and great atmosphere.

Maria Peligro- mexican restaurant with very friendly stuff and greeeat Margaritas

Dr. Pong-wanna drink, dance and play ping-pong?It’s your place!

Kiki-spacious beergarten with ping pong tables and chandeliers hanging off the tree branches. Also, IMHO has the most delicious wurst mit brotchen:)

Sankt Oberholtz-fantastic cakes!

Cafe Einstein Stammhaus-absolutely gorgeous with a small garden filled with lanterns, delicious food but quite pricy!

Bar 25-across from Kiki, a really cool place to dance and drink!

Also worth checking out Neue Odessa, Kuschlowski, Madame Claude, Das Hotel.

Clubs:

Panorama Bar and Berghein – nothing like anything you’ve seen before. In the former warehouse the party goes on from Friday to Sunday non-stop, you don’t have to leave the club. Be prepared to be surprised!:)

Watergate-its downstairs floor has a glass-front panorama of the Spree and a decked platform, so you can have a breath of fresh air. The intimate main floor is illuminated by a technicolor lighting installation spanning the entire roof.sMost importantly its trademark is programming. No weekend goes by without at least one big draw DJ name being plucked from the roster of an international techno label. Dress not too fancy (no highheel for girls and no shirts for guys), since they won’t let you in.

Tresor- has several rooms on several levels with great house, techno and electro music.

Cookies-great parties on Tuesday and Thursday. Two rooms: one with top 40 and the other with electro and house music.

Club der Visionaire- next to Badeshiffe, located just on the river with a large outdoor deck to relax and have a drink.

Maria am Ostbahnhoff—I loved the music, but for some pople it may be a bit dingy and crowded.
